Commercial Ice Machine Parts Identification and Compatibility Guide

Identify a commercial ice machine part by recording the complete model number, serial number, revision or auxiliary code, and electrical data from its nameplate. Then use the manufacturer’s parts manual for that exact configuration and confirm the OEM part number, serial break, and documented supersession. Do not select electrical, water-contact, or refrigeration parts by appearance alone.
This process applies to control boards, pumps, valves, probes, motors, contactors, compressors, fan assemblies, water-system parts, and other documented service components. It does not make every repair suitable for an operator. Refrigerant-circuit work, energized diagnostics, and other hazardous service require appropriately qualified personnel.
Heads up
A model name from an invoice, equipment schedule, or online listing is not a substitute for the machine’s data plate. Similar-looking machines can use different voltage configurations, control revisions, refrigerants, or service parts.
The five identifiers to collect before ordering#
A dependable commercial ice machine parts identification record contains these five items:

Also photograph the full nameplate, the installed component label, its connector arrangement, and its position before disassembly. Photographs are supporting evidence, not the primary compatibility test.
1. Find and read the model and serial data plate#
The nameplate location is manufacturer- and product-specific. Do not assume that all commercial ice machines place it behind the same panel.
For example, manufacturer service literature can specify different locations by product family, such as a rear panel, interior cabinet wall, control area, or compressor compartment. These variations show why the correct service or installation manual must control the search. Common inspection points include:
- The rear exterior panel
- An interior side wall
- The control-box area
- Behind a removable front panel
- The compressor compartment
- A separate plate on a remote condenser, dispenser, or storage bin
A modular installation can contain several independently identified products. Record the ice-making head, bin or dispenser, and remote condenser separately. A serial number from the bin does not identify parts inside the ice maker.
Clean a dirty plate carefully without removing its printed data. If it is unreadable, check service records, warranty registration, or the manufacturer’s support system. Mark any value obtained from secondary records as unverified until it can be confirmed.
Do not decode a serial number from an unofficial chart#
A serial number does not always encode the manufacture date. Manitowoc documented a change to sequential serial numbers that no longer contained the year and month; the company added a separate manufacture-date field to the model/serial plate. That bulletin is a direct warning against applying an old decoding rule to a newer serial format.
Use a manufacturer bulletin, manual, or support representative to interpret the number. Do not rely on a marketplace seller’s serial-number calculator unless its result is traceable to current manufacturer documentation.
2. Identify the exact configuration, not only the model family#
Copy punctuation and suffixes exactly. A shortened model number can omit the information that separates:
- Air-cooled, water-cooled, and remote-cooled machines
- 115-volt and 208–230-volt versions
- Single-phase and three-phase equipment
- Different frequencies
- Refrigerant or compressor configurations
- Cube, flake, or nugget variants
- Regional and regulatory versions
Manufacturer documentation demonstrates how material these differences can be. A Manitowoc control-board instruction maps different model-plate electrical configurations to distinct setup suffixes, including 115/60/1, 208–230/60/1, 208–230/60/3, 230/50/1, and 460/60/3. The instruction also requires the model and serial number to activate the applicable operating and diagnostic lookup tables. A board that physically connects can still require configuration for the exact machine.
Tip
Transcribe the nameplate into the parts request, but attach a clear photograph too. The photograph lets a distributor detect a missed dash, suffix, voltage code, or separate manufacture-date field.
3. Resolve the serial break or engineering revision#
A serial break is a documented production boundary. The manufacturer used one part before that boundary and another part after it. The boundary can appear as:
- “Before” and “after” serial numbers
- “Through” and “from” ranges
- An auxiliary code
- A manufacture-date break
- A lettered engineering revision
- A parts-manual edition tied to a production series
Hoshizaki’s official parts lookup organizes model results by auxiliary codes, which it describes as the first two characters of the serial number. This is a clear example of why the serial number participates in parts selection rather than merely identifying an individual machine.
Do not assume that the later part automatically replaces the earlier one. A change can include a different harness, bracket, sensor, mounting pattern, firmware, transformer, or companion kit. The new component may be backward-compatible only when installed with specified supporting parts.
When a parts diagram shows more than one candidate:
- Match the complete model.
- Match the auxiliary code, revision, or serial range.
- Read all footnotes and quantity notes.
- Check service bulletins for conversion instructions.
- Confirm whether the old OEM part number is superseded.
- Record the source document and its revision date.
- Ask the manufacturer or an authorized distributor to confirm any unresolved overlap.
A seller’s phrase such as “fits most models” does not resolve a serial break.
4. Use the exploded parts diagram correctly#
An exploded parts diagram establishes assembly position and links an illustration reference to a parts list. It is more reliable than visual marketplace matching, but only when it applies to the machine’s exact production configuration.
Use this sequence:
- Retrieve the manual from the manufacturer’s official parts or manuals lookup.
- Verify the model and revision on the manual cover or applicability page.
- Find the assembly in the exploded diagram.
- Match the illustration reference to the parts-list row.
- Read the description, quantity, serial notes, voltage notes, and footnotes.
- Search the OEM part number in the manufacturer’s current system.
- Confirm any supersession in writing before ordering.
Do not treat the illustration number as the OEM part number. Diagram callout “12” might only point to row 12 in that document.
Also distinguish the service part from a subcomponent. A manufacturer may supply a complete pump assembly but not its internal motor, or a complete valve with a specified coil. Ordering an apparent subcomponent from an unrelated catalog can bypass documented material, sanitation, electrical, or certification requirements.
5. Match electrical ratings and the wiring diagram#
For an electrical part, matching shape and nominal voltage is insufficient. Compare the installed machine and the documented replacement for all applicable attributes:
- Voltage or voltage range
- Frequency in hertz
- Number of phases
- Current, load, or horsepower rating
- Coil voltage
- Contact configuration and rating
- Connector and pin assignment
- Grounding arrangement
- Protective-device requirements
- Control-board version or required programming
- Motor rotation, speed, or capacitor requirements
- Applicable safety or sanitation certification
Use the wiring diagram assigned to the machine’s configuration. It can be inside a panel or included in the service manual. Confirm its model and revision before using wire colors or terminal numbers; harness colors and terminal assignments can change.
Never convert a machine to another voltage by substituting a different motor, compressor, board, or transformer unless the manufacturer supplies a documented conversion procedure and specified parts.
OSHA states that only qualified persons may work on electrical circuit parts or equipment that have not been de-energized. Its hazardous-energy standard also requires covered employers to use energy-control procedures where unexpected energization, startup, or stored energy can cause injury. Follow the equipment manual, applicable law, and the employer’s lockout/tagout program.
6. Understand OEM, authorized replacement, and aftermarket labels#
These terms are often used loosely. Ask the seller what each claim means and request its supporting document.

An unverified aftermarket part is one for which the evidence does not establish exact compatibility. A similar housing, matching connector, generic description, or bare cross-reference is not enough.
Compatibility, manufacturer approval, and warranty coverage are separate questions. A compatibility review determines whether the evidence covers the exact machine configuration and the part’s relevant electrical, mechanical, material, sanitation, and certification requirements. Manufacturer approval asks whether the machine manufacturer has accepted or specified that part. Warranty coverage depends on the applicable warranty terms and the circumstances of the repair. Do not turn manufacturer approval into a universal compatibility or legal requirement, and do not assume that technical compatibility guarantees warranty coverage.
KOLD-DRAFT service literature expressly warns that non-approved parts can create a safety hazard or cause equipment and property damage, and states that their use will void that equipment warranty. That wording is evidence for the covered KOLD-DRAFT equipment; it is not a universal warranty rule for all brands.
Warranty terms differ by manufacturer, product, territory, installation date, and serial range. Review the warranty supplied with the machine and obtain a written answer for the specific repair. Keep the invoice, part packaging, compatibility documentation, authorization, and service record.

7. Know when identification is not authorization to repair#
Correctly identifying a component does not establish that an operator can safely or legally install it.
Use qualified service personnel for work that includes:
- Opening or altering a refrigerant circuit
- Adding or removing refrigerant
- Connecting gauges where refrigerant could be released
- Compressor, condenser, evaporator, or refrigerant-line replacement
- Diagnosis on exposed energized components
- Changes to fixed wiring, grounding, voltage, or circuit protection
- Work on flammable-refrigerant systems
- Repairs that the manufacturer reserves for trained or authorized service personnel
In the United States, EPA Section 608 rules require certification for technicians whose service, maintenance, repair, or disposal work could release refrigerant. EPA specifically includes connecting or disconnecting hoses and gauges, adding or removing refrigerant, and other work that violates refrigerant-circuit integrity.

Ask the supplier to state the compatible model, serial range or revision, and electrical configuration on the quote or order confirmation. For water- or food-contact parts, also request the applicable material, sanitation, and certification documentation. If the reply only says “should fit,” request documented confirmation before purchase.
Note
Keep a copy of the applicable parts-manual page and the supplier’s compatibility documentation with the work order. This creates a traceable record of the model, serial range, diagram reference, part number, and evidence used for the order.
Final compatibility check#
Do not place the order until every applicable line below is resolved:
- The data came from the correct ice-making head, not an attached bin or condenser.
- The complete model and serial number match the applicable manual.
- The auxiliary code, revision, date, or serial break is covered.
- The OEM part number comes from the correct exploded parts diagram, or the aftermarket cross-reference is supported by specific compatibility documentation.
- Any claimed supersession is documented by the manufacturer or an authorized channel.
- Voltage, frequency, phase, ratings, connectors, and control requirements match.
- Materials are documented for the intended environment and any water- or food-contact use.
- Required safety or sanitation certifications apply to the replacement and its use.
- Required brackets, harnesses, sensors, firmware, or conversion kits are included.
- Manufacturer approval and warranty consequences have been checked separately when relevant.
- Return terms are documented.
- The assigned person is qualified and, when required, certified for the work.
If one of these points remains uncertain, stop and escalate the request to the manufacturer, part supplier, or an authorized parts distributor. The delay is usually less costly than installing an incompatible control, motor, valve, water-system part, or refrigeration component.

There is no universal serial-number format, data-plate location, revision system, aftermarket-compatibility rule, manufacturer-approval requirement, or warranty rule for all commercial ice machines.
