The evidence limit comes before the verdict#
This is not a market-wide “best commercial ice machine” ranking. Accessible product-specific evidence supports a narrower comparison universe:
- Easy Ice and Simple Ice publish useful service descriptions.
- Simple Ice publishes a broad $5–$10 daily equivalent for equipment rated from 300 to 1,000 pounds per day, but its setup charge and model-specific payment are not public.
- Manitowoc publishes a 2026 suggested list price for the current IYP0500A-161 head.
- Hoshizaki publishes current model-specific operating data for the KM-520MAJ.
- No reviewed public source supplies a complete, matched installed purchase price and subscription quote for the same site, capacity, ice form, and term.
For this reason, the article does not declare a cheapest provider or manufacturer. It also removes Scotsman from the product set. Although manufacturer material is available for the MC0522, retaining another ownership example would not solve the missing matched-price evidence or improve the subscription-versus-buying calculation.

Electricity and water usually remain customer expenses under either method. Do not count them as subscription savings unless the agreement expressly includes them.
Worked cost screen: published figures only#
A complete current matched scenario is not publicly available. The following calculation is a screening example, not a purchase recommendation or a representation of a current quote.
The ownership inputs come from a U.S. Energy Information Administration equipment-cost appendix:
- Representative ENERGY STAR ice machine: 700 pounds per day.
- Total installed cost with bin: $3,737.
- Annual maintenance: $800.
- Average life: 8.5 years.
- Cost basis: 2022 dollars.
The subscription inputs come from Simple Ice’s public offer:
- Advertised daily equivalent: $5–$10.
- Covered capacity range: 300–1,000 pounds per day.
- One-time setup charge: required but not publicly quantified.
The calculation excludes setup, utilities, taxes, financing, residual value, emergency ice, and inflation because the cited public sources do not supply matched amounts. Utilities are excluded from both sides. The subscription totals are therefore minimums before the undisclosed setup charge.

The 102-month term equals the EIA benchmark’s 8.5-year average life.
Break-even result#
For this limited screen, the break-even daily subscription rate is:

Each result is below Simple Ice’s advertised $5 daily floor, even before adding the subscription setup charge. Under these specific historical inputs, ownership has the lower nominal total at all three terms.
That result is not transferable to a current project without qualification. The EIA benchmark is in 2022 dollars, represents a 700-pound unit, and is not a quote for the current Manitowoc or Hoshizaki products below. Simple Ice’s range spans several capacities and does not identify the exact equipment assigned to each daily rate.
Sensitivity analysis#
The term is the first sensitivity variable. Using the cited $800 annual maintenance assumption, ownership’s advantage over the $5 daily subscription case increases from $1,388 at five years to $4,975.50 at 8.5 years.
The break-even maintenance amount is also useful. Holding the EIA installed cost at $3,737 and using the $5 daily subscription floor:

If otherwise comparable ownership maintenance and repair costs exceed these annual amounts, the $5-per-day subscription case can become less expensive before setup, residual value, financing, taxes, or downtime are considered. At the $10 daily endpoint, the corresponding break-even maintenance amounts are much higher.
The most important sensitivity is still the missing site-specific quote. Replace every historical or advertised input before approving a purchase.

Use the same analysis period, expected ice production, utility rates, and discount method for both options.

For a level monthly subscription, the nominal break-even payment is:
(ownership total cost − subscription costs outside the monthly payment) ÷ number of months
Use discounted cash flow when payment timing or financing is material. A dollar paid in the final contract year is not equivalent to a dollar paid at installation.
Request at least three matched terms, such as 60, 84, and 102 months. Also require these items on one comparison sheet:
- Rated and expected production at the site’s air and water conditions.
- Ice form.
- Bin or dispenser model and usable storage.
- Filtration system and replacement-filter schedule.
- Freight, delivery, installation, startup, and permits.
- Electrical, water, drain, and ventilation work.
- Cleaning and preventive-maintenance frequency.
- Parts, labor, refrigerant, and after-hours coverage.
- Emergency-ice conditions and limits.
- Annual payment increases.
- Cancellation, relocation, removal, and end-of-term terms.
- Ownership or residual value at the end of the analysis period.
Easy Ice — managed subscription example#
Easy Ice states that its subscription includes the machine, professional installation, preventive maintenance, regular cleaning, service calls, and repairs. Its agreement explanation describes two complete cleaning, sanitizing, and preventive-maintenance visits each year.
For a covered failure under normal conditions, Easy Ice says it will deliver breakdown ice when possible. If delivery is not possible because of timing, geography, or quantity, it says it will reimburse purchased ice.
The coverage is conditional. The customer must provide suitable airflow, temperature, water, electricity, and drainage. The customer must also clean the air filter and exterior surfaces. Interruptions, unsuitable site conditions, blocked ventilation, customer damage, or an undersized machine can make service or replacement ice chargeable.
Easy Ice says each contract can have different equipment, setup, duration, and monthly fees. Because it publishes no standard rate, no supported Easy Ice term total or break-even result can be calculated without a written quote.
Simple Ice — regional subscription with a public price range#
Simple Ice documents an Iowa-focused subscription offer using Hoshizaki equipment. Its public description includes a bin or dispenser, commercial water filtration, preventive maintenance, two cleanings per year, and covered repair parts and labor. It also advertises up to 600 pounds of breakdown ice per day while covered equipment is being repaired.
Its $5–$10 daily equivalent is useful for the preliminary screen above, but it is not a model-specific quote. A one-time setup charge also applies. Confirm the selected machine, rated and expected production, bin, filtration, setup work, payment schedule, taxes, increases, minimum term, service area, breakdown-ice conditions, and exit terms.
The public range does not prove that Simple Ice is cheaper or more expensive for a particular Iowa site. Only the low endpoint was used for the most favorable subscription sensitivity case.
Manitowoc IYP0500A-161 — current 2026 ownership benchmark#
Manitowoc’s 2026 Americas price list identifies the IYP0500A-161 as a 115 V, air-cooled, half-dice modular head with a suggested list price of $10,240. The same document says it replaces the IYT0500A-161.
This replacement matters because the former comparison mixed incompatible evidence. The 4.87 kWh per 100 pounds figure came from a 50 Hz IYT0500 variant and did not support a claim about the U.S. 115 V IYT0500A-161. ENERGY STAR’s current record for the IYT0500A-161 instead reports:
- 421-pound harvest rate.
- 5.05 kWh per 100 pounds.
- 19.9 gallons of potable water per 100 pounds.
- ENERGY STAR certification.
Those figures describe the replaced IYT0500A-161, not the new IYP0500A-161. They must not be transferred to the replacement model. The public evidence reviewed for this revision did not provide a current ENERGY STAR record for the IYP0500A-161.
For a current ownership proposal, request model-specific production and resource data for the IYP0500A-161 and add a compatible bin, filtration, freight, installation, permits, and site work. The $10,240 manufacturer figure is a suggested list price for the head, not an installed total.
Hoshizaki KM-520MAJ — documented crescent-ice ownership option#
Hoshizaki identifies the KM-520MAJ as an air-cooled, 115 V modular crescent cuber. Its current product page states:
- Up to 556 pounds of ice per 24 hours.
- 4.68 kWh per 100 pounds at 90°F air and 70°F water.
- 14.7 gallons of potable water per 100 pounds at the same condition.
- A 45–100°F ambient operating range.
- A 45–90°F inlet-water range.
- Several compatible bins and dispensers, sold separately.
- Hardwired installation with no cord or plug included.
These figures support operating and installation modeling, but they do not supply an installed price. Actual production varies with air and water conditions. Request a complete quote for the head, selected bin or dispenser, filtration, freight, hardwired electrical connection, plumbing, drain work, startup, and service coverage.
The current manufacturer values are used here instead of the older ENERGY STAR values in the original article. A product summary, pro, or cost calculation must identify its source and test condition rather than combining figures from different records.
Energy and water calculations#
For each quoted model, use one model-specific source and preserve its test conditions:
annual electricity cost = annual pounds of ice ÷ 100 × kWh per 100 pounds × electricity rate
annual water and sewer cost = annual pounds of ice ÷ 100 × gallons per 100 pounds × combined water and sewer rate
Do not use maximum rated output as expected daily demand. Use the amount of ice the operation expects to make and adjust production planning for site temperature and water conditions.
ENERGY STAR states that certified batch-type commercial ice makers are about 10% more energy efficient and 20% more water efficient than standard models on average. These are category-level figures, not savings guarantees for the products in this comparison.
Cleaning, repairs, and downtime#
Easy Ice and Simple Ice each describe two annual cleanings in their standard public offers. An owner must budget equivalent work according to manufacturer instructions, water conditions, usage, and applicable health requirements.
An ownership repair reserve should include:
- Technician travel and labor.
- Parts and refrigerant.
- Filters and cleaning supplies.
- After-hours premiums.
- Purchased ice.
- Staff time and lost production.
- Equipment replacement if repair is not economic.
A subscription does not eliminate all downtime cost. Verify response hours, delivery areas, reimbursement rules, daily ice limits, exclusions, and failures caused by water, power, ventilation, drainage, temperature, misuse, or insufficient capacity.
Tax and accounting treatment#
Purchased equipment is generally a capital asset. IRS Publication 946 explains how businesses generally recover qualifying equipment costs through depreciation, subject to applicable classifications, elections, limits, and current law.
A lease or service subscription can receive different treatment, but the contract label does not determine the accounting or tax result by itself. Purchase options, contract duration, control of the asset, jurisdiction, and contract substance can change the classification.
Ask a qualified tax professional to confirm depreciation, Section 179 or bonus-depreciation eligibility, lease classification, sales tax, deductions, and after-tax residual value. Do not choose either structure only because a salesperson calls it a write-off.
Verdict#
The supported public-data screen favors ownership at 60, 84, and 102 months. Its five-year result is $7,737 for the historical ownership benchmark versus at least $9,125 plus setup at Simple Ice’s advertised low endpoint. The nominal five-year break-even subscription rate is $4.24 per day.
That is an evidence-limited screening result, not proof that buying is cheaper for a current installation. The two sides are not matched current quotes. The historical ownership model is in 2022 dollars, and the public subscription range covers several capacities.
Buying is the stronger candidate when the installed quote, maintenance forecast, repair reserve, utilities, and financing remain below the matched subscription total after residual value. A subscription is the stronger candidate when its price is competitive and the value of installation, scheduled service, repair coverage, cash preservation, and conditional emergency ice justifies the premium.
Obtain current written proposals before deciding. Refresh them if they are more than 90 days old, and reject any comparison that substitutes a head-only price for a complete installation or transfers specifications between models.
